How the UCount Rewards Calculator Works

The calculator takes three inputs that cover the most common ways South Africans earn UCount Rewards Points: everyday card spend, groceries at Checkers or Shoprite, and fuel at Astron Energy or Caltex.

Enter your monthly amounts, select your UCount Tier Level and card type, and the calculator applies the current earn rates from Standard Bank’s programme. Results are shown in rand value, assuming the standard redemption rate of 1 Rewards Point = R0.01.

The calculator also deducts the R25 monthly membership fee so you can see your net monthly benefit at a glance.

What Is the UCount Rewards Programme?

UCount Rewards is Standard Bank’s loyalty programme for personal banking clients. For R25 per month, members earn Rewards Points every time they use a qualifying Standard Bank Credit, Evolve, Cheque, or Debit Card. Points can be redeemed at a wide network of retail partners, used to pay for fuel, deposited into savings and investment accounts, or donated to educational causes.

The programme is built around five Tier Levels. Your tier is recalculated every month based on Tiering Points, which reflect how many Standard Bank products and services you actively use. The higher your tier, the better your earn rate across every spending category.

UCount Rewards Tier Levels Explained

Your Tier Level is the single biggest factor affecting how much you earn. Tiering Points are earned automatically based on your monthly banking activity — holding a home loan, having a credit card, using Standard Bank insurance, or subscribing to streaming services loaded on your credit card all contribute.

The five tiers and their Tiering Point ranges are:

TierTiering Points Required
Tier 10 – 399
Tier 2400 – 574
Tier 3575 – 724
Tier 4725 – 874
Tier 5875 and above

At Tier 1 with a Physical Credit Card, you earn 0.25% back on general spend. By Tier 5, that climbs to 1.00% — four times as much for exactly the same purchase. The difference is even more pronounced on fuel and grocery rewards, making it worth consolidating your banking products with Standard Bank if you are close to a higher tier.

How UCount Earn Rates Work by Category

General Card Spend

Every qualifying swipe or tap earns Rewards Points regardless of where you shop. Earn rates range from 0.05% (Tier 1 Debit) to 1.00% (Tier 5 Virtual/Physical Credit). General card rewards are capped at a monthly spend of R50 000.

Choose Your Own Rewards (CYOR) — Groceries

CYOR allows you to select a preferred category — Groceries, Fashion, or Lifestyle — and earn at an accelerated rate at participating retailers in that category. The calculator uses the Groceries option, which applies at Checkers and Shoprite in-store.

At Tier 5 with a Virtual Credit Card, you earn 30% back in Rewards Points on your grocery bill. Even at Tier 1, a Physical Credit Card still earns 2% back at Checkers or Shoprite — more than most competing programmes offer on groceries.

CYOR rewards are capped at the lower of 20% of your combined card spend or R2 500 per month.

Fuel Rewards

Fuel is where UCount consistently outperforms other South African bank rewards programmes. Members can earn on every litre purchased at Astron Energy or Caltex. Standard fuel rates range from R0.10/litre (Tier 1 Debit) up to R5.00/litre (Tier 5 Credit). Members who qualify for Double Fuel Rewards can earn up to R10.00 back per litre at Tier 5.

Given that the average UCount member spends around R2 000 a month on fuel, the fuel category alone can offset the monthly membership fee many times over at mid to higher tiers.

Is UCount Rewards Worth the R25 Monthly Fee?

For most active Standard Bank customers, yes. A Tier 3 member with a Physical Credit Card spending R5 000/month generally, R3 000 at Checkers, and 60 litres of fuel at standard rates would recover the membership fee several times over within a single month.

The programme makes most sense if you:

  • Already bank with Standard Bank and hold multiple products
  • Fill up regularly at Astron Energy or Caltex
  • Shop at Checkers or Shoprite and can maximise a CYOR category
  • Are at Tier 3 or above, where earn rates increase meaningfully

If you are on Tier 1 and only use a debit card for low monthly spend, it is worth using the calculator above to confirm whether your projected monthly rewards exceed R25 before committing.

How to Redeem UCount Rewards Points

Points can be redeemed in several ways:

  • Swipe your UCount Rewards Card in-store at participating retailers
  • Pay for fuel at Astron Energy or Caltex service stations
  • Deposit into a Standard Bank savings or investment account via the online redemption portal
  • Pay school fees via School-Days or donate to a student via Feenix
  • Reduce a personal loan balance through the redemption portal
  • Access Bidvest Premier Lounges at South African airports

Points do not expire while your membership is active, giving you flexibility to accumulate and redeem at a time that suits you.
