What Is the Gautrain Fare Calculator?

The Gautrain fare calculator estimates the cost of a trip on South Africa’s rapid rail network, connecting Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo International Airport. Because Gautrain pricing depends on several factors at once, including the exact stations, the time of day, and the type of ticket used, working out a fare by hand isn’t always straightforward. This tool simplifies that by giving you a quick estimate before you travel.

Gautrain fares have remained unchanged since 1 June 2025, with the Gautrain Management Agency confirming no annual increase for 2026, so the figures used here reflect the current, frozen fare structure.

How Gautrain Fares Are Calculated

Gautrain operates a tag-in, tag-out system, meaning your fare is calculated automatically based on the station where you enter the network and the station where you exit. Three main factors determine your fare:

• The specific stations you travel between, since fares are distance-based
• Whether you tag in during a peak or off-peak period
• Whether you’re using pay-as-you-go travel value or a fixed train product

Peak vs Off-Peak Times

Gautrain fares are higher during peak periods and lower during off-peak periods, so the time you travel can meaningfully affect your cost.

Weekday peak periods: 06:00 to 08:30 and 15:00 to 18:30

Weekday off-peak periods: All other times outside the peak windows

Weekends and public holidays: Treated as peak all day, regardless of the actual time

This last point catches many occasional travellers off guard, since it’s easy to assume weekend travel would be cheaper simply because it falls outside the usual weekday rush.

Gautrain Fare Products

Gautrain offers a few different ways to pay, depending on how often you travel:

• Pay-As-You-Go: Load value onto a Gautrain card, or tap a contactless bank card, and the correct fare is deducted automatically. This suits occasional travellers, particularly for off-peak trips.
• Single Trip Product: One train trip between two selected stations, priced at the peak fare regardless of when you travel, valid for three years from purchase.
• Return Trip Product: A return journey between two selected stations, also priced at the peak fare, which must be activated within seven days and used within 31 days of activation.
• Weekly Product: Ten single train trips between two selected stations, activated within seven days and used within ten days.
• Monthly Product: Forty-four single train trips between two selected stations, activated within seven days and used within 44 days.

Train products cover train trips only, so you’ll still need pay-as-you-go value loaded for connecting bus trips or station parking.

Worked Example

A commuter travelling between Sandton and Pretoria, one of Gautrain’s most common corridors, pays differently depending on the time of day. As a typical example, a single trip on this route costs around R91 during peak periods and around R73 during off-peak periods. Over a five-day work week, always travelling at peak times in both directions, that difference alone adds up to roughly R180 in extra cost compared to travelling off-peak, which is why timing matters for regular commuters deciding between pay-as-you-go and a fixed product.

Gautrain Bus and Parking Costs

If your journey includes a Gautrain feeder bus, rail users receive a discounted bus fare provided they tag onto the bus within one hour of exiting the train. Typical bus add-on costs sit around R5 off-peak and R12 peak for this connecting leg.

Rail-user parking at Gautrain stations is also discounted for train users. A R1-per-day parking promotion for rail users has been extended through 1 September 2026, making park-and-ride a notably cheaper option for commuters who drive part of their route.

Tips to Save on Gautrain Fares

• Shift your travel outside the 06:00-08:30 and 15:00-18:30 weekday windows where your schedule allows, since off-peak fares are consistently cheaper.
• If you commute daily between the same two stations, compare the cost of a Weekly or Monthly Product against paying pay-as-you-go for every trip, since the fixed products are usually cheaper for frequent, fixed-route travel.
• Take advantage of the R1 rail-user parking promotion if you drive to your nearest station rather than paying for a full day’s parking elsewhere.
• Remember that weekend and public holiday travel is priced as peak, so factor this into weekend trip budgets rather than assuming a discount.
