What Is a Road Trip Cost Estimator?

A road trip cost estimator gives you a full picture of what a trip will actually cost, beyond just fuel. While a fuel cost calculator only covers what you’ll spend at the pump, this tool adds in the other expenses that make up a real road trip budget, such as toll fees, overnight accommodation, and meals along the way. It’s built for anyone planning a multi-day trip who wants a realistic total before they commit to a route or a budget.

What This Calculator Includes

This estimator combines several cost categories into a single trip total:

  • Fuel costs, based on your trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel consumption, and the current fuel price
  • Toll fees for routes that pass through toll plazas, such as sections of the N1, N3, and N4
  • Accommodation, based on the number of nights and your expected cost per night
  • Food and incidentals, based on the number of days and your expected daily spend

How to Estimate Your Road Trip Cost

Step 1: Enter your total trip distance in kilometres, along with your vehicle’s fuel consumption and the current fuel price per litre.

Step 2: Add any toll costs you expect to pay along your route.

Step 3: Enter your accommodation cost per night and the number of nights you’ll be staying over.

Step 4: Enter your expected daily spend on food and other incidentals, multiplied by the number of days on the road.

Step 5: The calculator adds all these categories together to give you a total estimated trip cost.

Road Trip Cost Formula

Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ 100) × Fuel Consumption (L/100km) × Fuel Price per Litre

Total Trip Cost = Fuel Cost + Toll Costs + (Accommodation per Night × Nights) + (Daily Spend × Days)

Worked Example

Say you’re planning a four-day trip from Cape Town to the Garden Route and back, covering 900 km round trip. Your car uses 7 litres per 100 km, and fuel is currently priced at R26.00 per litre.

Fuel Cost = (900 ÷ 100) × 7 × R26.00 = R1,638.00

If you expect to pay around R150 in tolls along the N2, book three nights of accommodation at R850 per night, and budget R400 per day for food and incidentals across four days, your total trip cost comes to:

Total Trip Cost = R1,638.00 + R150.00 + (R850.00 × 3) + (R400.00 × 4) = R5,938.00

Typical Road Trip Costs in South Africa

Fuel prices in South Africa are adjusted monthly and can shift significantly from one month to the next, so it’s worth checking the current price before finalising your budget, particularly for trips planned more than a few weeks in advance. As of July 2026, inland petrol prices sit at roughly R25 to R26 per litre, though coastal prices and diesel prices differ slightly.

Toll costs vary by route. A trip along the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, for example, passes through several toll plazas and can add a meaningful amount to a one-way trip, so it’s worth checking toll totals for your specific route before you travel. Accommodation costs vary widely depending on whether you’re booking guesthouses, self-catering units, or hotels, and whether your trip falls during peak holiday season.

Tips to Reduce Your Road Trip Costs

A few adjustments can meaningfully lower your total trip cost:

  • Travel outside peak holiday periods, when accommodation and some toll-adjacent services tend to cost more.
  • Share the trip with passengers to split fuel, accommodation, and toll costs across more people.
  • Compare toll routes against toll-free alternatives, where the time difference is small but the saving is worthwhile.
  • Self-cater some meals instead of eating out for every meal on multi-day trips.
