What is a GPA?
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It’s calculated by converting your course grades into point values, then averaging those values based on credit hours or course weights. GPA is commonly used by schools, universities, and employers to assess academic achievement.
Why Calculate Your GPA?
- Monitor Academic Progress: Track how your grades affect your overall academic standing
- Plan Future Courses: Understand what grades you need to achieve your target GPA
- University Applications: Many institutions require specific GPA thresholds for admission
- Scholarship Eligibility: Most scholarships have minimum GPA requirements
- Employment: Employers often review GPA when hiring recent graduates
- Academic Probation: Stay informed about whether you’re at risk of academic probation
GPA Calculation Formula
How GPA is Calculated
Basic Formula:
GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
Example Calculation
Semester Courses:
- Mathematics: Grade A (4.0) × 4 credits = 16.0 points
- English: Grade B+ (3.3) × 3 credits = 9.9 points
- Biology: Grade A- (3.7) × 4 credits = 14.8 points
- History: Grade B (3.0) × 3 credits = 9.0 points
Calculation:
- Total Points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 49.7
- Total Credits: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
- GPA: 49.7 ÷ 14 = 3.55
