The Formulas Behind It

The three formulas are rearrangements of the same basic equation. If you remember just one — that speed equals distance over time — you can derive the other two.

A quick worked example: you drive 250 km from Pretoria to Bloemfontein-direction at an average of 100 km/h.

  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed = 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5 hours (2 hours 30 minutes)

Now suppose you want to do the trip in 2 hours flat. What average speed would you need?

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time = 250 ÷ 2 = 125 km/h — which is over the legal limit, so you’d need to leave earlier instead.

Average Speed vs Instantaneous Speed

Worth knowing: this calculator gives you average speed — the total distance divided by total time. Your car’s speedometer shows instantaneous speed, which is your speed right now, at this instant. They’re different numbers.

If you drive 100 km in 1 hour, your average speed is 100 km/h, but your instantaneous speed will have varied between 0 (at the robots in town) and maybe 120 (on the open highway). For trip planning, average speed is what matters. For staying within the speed limit at any given moment, the speedometer is what matters.

Is the calculator accurate? The maths is exact. Real-world accuracy depends on whether your inputs are accurate — particularly your average speed, which is rarely truly constant on a real journey.

Can I use it for a speedometer accuracy test? Yes. Drive a known distance at a steady indicated speed, time it precisely, and calculate the true speed. Compare against the dashboard reading. South African regulations (based on UN ECE R39) allow speedometers to over-read by up to 10% plus 4 km/h, but they may not under-read at all.

Why does my answer come out in decimals of an hour? The calculator converts decimal hours into hours, minutes, and seconds automatically. So 2.5 hours displays as 2 h 30 min.
