Current Number Ranges for Each Game
South Africa’s National Lottery games changed significantly when Sizekhaya Holdings took over as operator on 1 June 2026. The generator uses the current, post-transition number ranges below:
- Lotto and Lotto Plus 1: six numbers from a pool of 1 to 52, plus a Bonus Ball drawn separately
- Lotto 5 Max: six numbers from the same 1 to 52 pool, played alongside Lotto as an add-on game formerly known as Lotto Plus 2
- PowerBall: five numbers from a pool of 1 to 50, plus one PowerBall number from 1 to 16
- PowerBall Xtra: uses the same number selection as PowerBall, played as an add-on formerly known as PowerBall Plus
- Daily Lotto: five numbers from a pool of 1 to 36
If you have seen older content or apps referencing a Lotto range of 1 to 58, or a PowerBall range of 1 to 20, that reflects the rules used before the June 2026 changeover and is no longer current.
How Random Number Generation Works
The generator uses a random number function to select numbers from the correct pool for your chosen game, without replacement, meaning the same number cannot be selected twice within a single board.
Selection method: For a game requiring k numbers from a pool of n, the generator randomly selects k unique integers from 1 to n, with each remaining number having an equal chance of selection at every step.
This mirrors exactly how the physical lottery draw machine works, drawing balls one at a time from a fixed set without putting any ball back before the next draw.
Understanding Your Odds
Lottery odds are calculated using combinations, which count how many different ways a set of numbers can be chosen from a larger pool regardless of order.
Combination formula: Number of possible combinations = n! ÷ (k! × (n − k)!)
Where n is the total pool of numbers and k is how many numbers are drawn.
Worked example: Lotto odds under the current rules
For Lotto, six numbers are drawn from a pool of 52, so n = 52 and k = 6.
Using the combination formula, the total number of possible six number combinations works out to 20,358,520. This means the odds of matching all six main numbers with a single board are 1 in 20,358,520.
This is a meaningful improvement for players compared to the previous 1 to 58 number range, which produced odds of roughly 1 in 40,475,358. Reducing the pool from 58 to 52 numbers roughly halved the odds of winning the jackpot, which is one of the most player friendly changes introduced under the new operator.
Current Game Rules and Pricing
- Lotto draws every Wednesday and Saturday at 21:00 and costs R5 per board for a standard entry.
- Lotto Plus 1 is played alongside Lotto using the same six numbers from 1 to 52, at an additional cost per board.
- Lotto 5 Max replaces the former Lotto Plus 2 and includes a jackpot cascade feature, meaning the final draw of each calendar month is guaranteed to pay out, rolling down to a lower division if nobody matches all six numbers.
- PowerBall draws every Tuesday and Friday at 21:00, requiring five numbers from 1 to 50 plus one PowerBall number from 1 to 16.
- PowerBall Xtra replaces the former PowerBall Plus and also includes a jackpot cascade feature at month end.
- Daily Lotto draws every night at 21:00, using five numbers from 1 to 36, and no longer has a Plus add-on, since Daily Lotto Plus was discontinued when Sizekhaya took over.

Common Misconceptions About Lotto Numbers
- “Some numbers are due to come up.” Every draw is independent. A number that has not appeared in several draws is no more or less likely to appear next time than any other number.
